Documenting technical decisions: why we write our architectural choices down

In software engineering culture, transparency is the foundation of sustainability. Building complex systems means making dozens of architectural decisions every day: which database, which integration method, what threshold for the model? Our principle at werea is plain: a technical decision counts as finished not when it has been discussed in the team, but when it has been written down with all of its reasoning.

Months later, when the system needs an update, being able to find the answer to "why did we do it this way?" in a durable document rather than in someone's memory matters enormously. A traceable, transparent documentation culture preserves not only the code but the rationale behind the decisions. It speeds up how quickly new engineers find their feet, and it feeds directly into the team's performance and the health of the project.
