The challenge
General-purpose language models did not command the language of commercial contracts, legal terminology or penalty clauses well enough — and public APIs were off the table because of client confidentiality.
Our approach and integration
Open-source models (Llama and Mistral) were specialised with QLoRA on a dataset of more than 100,000 anonymised contract clauses. Distillation raised inference speed and the model was quantised to INT8. The solution runs on the firm's own GPU servers behind vLLM, integrated with its document management system.
Results and impact
Risk and dispute analysis time per contract fell by 80%.
Third-party API dependency was removed entirely, securing confidentiality.
The legal team's daily review capacity rose 4.5×.
